Dewatering of sludge is a process aimed at reducing its volume by
removing as much water as possible. Frequently this is done
mechanically, where the sediment is subjected to a so-called
conditioning
process; this involves changing the structure and properties of the
sediment, weakening the forces binding water to the surface of
particles.
A commonly used method of conditioning is a chemical method and
consists of adding electrolytes to the sludge, such as aluminum sulfate,
ferric sulfate or ferric chloride, or polyelectrolytes based on organic
polymers.
